Jay Phillips

Jay L. Phillips is a registered patent attorney whose practice centers on intellectual property, corporate and business law, and general transactional matters. Based in Lexington, Kentucky, Jay works with startups, established companies, and individual innovators to protect, commercialize, and scale their ideas. His work includes patent prosecution before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), trademark registration, licensing and technology transfer, and strategic counseling on technology commercialization and IP portfolio management.

Jay also advises Kentucky businesses on entity formation, governance, mergers and acquisitions, and contract negotiation, helping clients align their intellectual property assets with broader business objectives. His combined experience in IP and corporate law enables him to deliver practical, growth-oriented counsel that safeguards innovation while supporting long-term business success. A University of Kentucky “Double Wildcat,” Jay earned his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural and Medical Biotechnology before completing his Juris Doctor at the UK J. David Rosenberg College of Law. He previously served as a Graduate Fellow in the University of Kentucky’s Office of Technology Commercialization, where he assessed university-developed inventions for patentability, licensing potential, and market impact—experience that continues to shape his counsel to technology-driven clients. Outside the firm, Jay is actively involved in the Lexington community, serving as President of Rotaract of Lexington and holding leadership roles in several civic organizations.
